USING NICOTINE GUM
How to chew the nicotine gum properly
Nicotine gum should be chewed slowly. First chew it until you feel tingling, or a strong peppery taste develops. Then place (or 'park') the gum in between the cheek and gum. Hold it there until the flavour or tingling wears off. Then repeat. The gum should last for around half an hour, when the flavour and tingling will have worn off.
Nicotine gum is not like regular gum. Remember, it should be chewed slowly, and only one gum at a time. Do not chew a gum directly after another one.
The recommended usage is to chew a gum every one to two hours when you first start, or whenever you feel a craving. After three months this should be reduced, and after six moths it should be stopped altogether.
Nicotine gum tips
Make sure to chew the gum properly - it is not like regular gum! Many people who chew it like everyday gum experience stomach cramps, acidity and heartburn. This is because the nicotine goes through the saliva to the stomach. Instead the nicotine should be absorbed into the bloodstream through the lining of the mouth.
Avoid some beverages - Drinks high in citrus or acid such as coffee or orange juice should be avoided 15 minutes before chewing a gum. These types of drinks interfere with nicotine absorption. Alcoholic drinks should also be avoided.
Why use nicotine gum?
About two in three smokers want to quit but can't. Using nicotine gum can greatly increase your chance of success by stopping or reducing the nicotine craving.
Nicotine gum alleviates the withdrawal symptoms that make it so hard to quit.
Nicotine gum is a flexible and convenient way to wean yourself off cigarettes.
You can still receive a small, controlled dosage of nicotine without the nasty chemicals found in cigarettes.
There is no smoke inhalation.
Nicotine gum is more effective than patches as it lets your body receive a controlled nicotine hit. Patches release nicotine slowly and consistently over time, which is the reason people on patches may still feel the need for a smoke.
What strength nicotine gum should I use?
There are two strengths of nicotine gum: 2mg or 4mg. It is recommended to begin with the 2mg dosage. However if you are a heavy smoker (more than 25 cigarettes a day) then the 4mg may be the better option.
